Poachers Pantry – A Perfect Country Escape Just a short 15-minute drive from Canberra, Poachers Pantry feels like stepping into a quintessential Australian pastoral scene. The journey there is half the joy — rolling hills dotted with sheep, vineyards stretching across the landscape, and a sense of calm that instantly slows your pace. The dining room is warm and inviting, with large windows framing the countryside and an open fire adding to the cosy atmosphere. During our visit, we were even treated to the amusing sight of staff gently shooing a few curious sheep from the garden — a charming reminder of where we were. The seasonal menu showcased the best of local produce, with many ingredients sourced directly from the farm. It was generous and full of tempting options. We chose the truffle milkloaf, spiced pumpkin, and goat dishes, each beautifully presented and packed with flavour. Before our meal, our friendly and knowledgeable waiter guided us through a wine tasting. The wines were a highlight — excellent quality and very reasonably priced. The sparkling wine and the Tempranillo were standouts. We visited for a birthday lunch, and the staff went the extra mile to make it special, adding a festive touch to the dessert that was thoughtful and much appreciated. What impressed us most was the combination of outstanding food, exceptional wines, and genuinely warm service — all at excellent value. Poachers Pantry manages to deliver a fine dining experience while still feeling relaxed and rural.
